How does finasteride work?
Finasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the androgen most responsible for male pattern hair loss. Lowering DHT at the follicle slows the miniaturization process that causes thinning. It is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss and requires a prescription.
What is the difference between oral and topical minoxidil?
Topical minoxidil is applied directly to the scalp and is available over the counter. Low-dose oral minoxidil is a prescription option used off-label for hair loss; some men prefer it because it avoids daily scalp application. Which one fits — if either — depends on your health history, blood pressure, and preferences, which is exactly what the consultation covers.
Does TRT cause hair loss?
Testosterone therapy can accelerate hair loss in men who are genetically predisposed to male pattern baldness, because more circulating testosterone means more substrate for DHT conversion. It does not cause loss in men without that predisposition. If you are on TRT or considering it, hair and hormone treatment should be planned together — which is how we practice.

Medication is filled at a pharmacy under your name at the pharmacy’s own cash price. We do not bill insurance; visits are typically HSA/FSA-eligible, and a superbill is provided.
